Cookie Policy

Last updated: September 28, 2026

This Cookie Policy explains how Dreaming New York uses cookies and similar technologies on dreamingnewyork.com. It should be read together with our Privacy Policy.

Where European and Italian cookie rules apply, this policy is intended to reflect the principles of Article 5(3) of Directive 2002/58/EC (ePrivacy Directive), Article 122 of the Italian Personal Data Protection Code, Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) where personal data is processed, and the Italian Data Protection Authority’s guidelines on cookies and other tracking tools.

1. What cookies are

Cookies are small text files or identifiers that a website or third-party service can store on or read from a browser or device. They can be used to provide technical functions, remember choices, protect a website, measure activity, attribute referrals, personalize services or support advertising.

2. Similar technologies

Cookie rules can also apply to technologies that perform comparable storage or tracking functions. Depending on the service, these may include local storage, pixels, tags, software development or browser identifiers, scripts and other active or passive techniques capable of recognizing or observing a device or browser. References to “cookies” in this policy include similar technologies where appropriate.

3. First-party and third-party cookies

First-party cookies are set by Dreaming New York or through the dreamingnewyork.com domain. Third-party cookies are set or read by another provider whose technology, content or service is used by the Site. Third parties may process information for their own purposes and under their own privacy policies.

4. Session and persistent cookies

Session cookies generally expire when the browser session ends. Persistent cookies remain until their configured expiration date or until they are deleted. The duration of a cookie depends on its purpose and the provider that sets it.

5. Categories of cookies and tracking technologies

CategoryMain purposeConsent position under EU/Italian rules
Strictly necessary / technicalDeliver requested pages, protect the Site, manage network/security functions, prevent abuse, store privacy choices or provide a function specifically requested by the user.May be used without prior consent only when they fall within the applicable statutory exemption.
Preference / functionalityRemember optional settings or improve convenience.Consent may be required when the technology is not strictly necessary for a function expressly requested by the user.
Analytics / measurementMeasure traffic, page performance and how visitors use the Site.Prior consent is generally required for non-essential analytics. A limited exemption may apply only where the specific configuration meets the conditions recognized by applicable law.
Advertising / profilingBuild or infer interests, personalize advertising, measure campaigns or track users across services.Prior consent is required where the technology is not strictly necessary and EU/Italian cookie rules apply.
Affiliate / conversion measurementAttribute a click, booking or purchase to a referral and measure commercial performance.Consent is required where the technology involves non-essential storage/access or tracking for which no exemption applies.
Embedded content / social mediaLoad videos, maps, social posts, widgets or other third-party features. If loading the feature causes non-essential tracking, consent should be obtained before that tracking is activated.

6. Strictly necessary and technical technologies

Technical technologies may be used where necessary to transmit communications, deliver a service requested by the user, protect the Site, balance traffic, detect abuse, maintain essential settings or remember the user’s cookie/privacy choices. These technologies are not used as a legal shortcut for advertising or profiling.

7. Analytics technologies

Analytics tools may help us understand how the Site performs, which pages are visited and how users navigate. Under Italian guidance, analytics cookies do not automatically become “technical” merely because they are used for statistics. An exemption from consent is only possible when the specific implementation satisfies the conditions recognized by the competent authority, including appropriate minimization and restrictions on use. Otherwise, analytics technologies should remain inactive until consent is given.

8. WordPress, Jetpack and Akismet

The Site is built with WordPress and currently includes plugins such as Jetpack and Akismet. Depending on the functions enabled, these services may use technical identifiers or process data for security, anti-spam, performance, forms, statistics or other website functions. Not every Jetpack or Akismet feature necessarily uses cookies, and the exact behavior depends on the modules and settings active at the time of the visit.

9. Affiliate links and booking partners

Dreaming New York contains affiliate links, including links to travel and booking providers such as Booking.com and potentially other partners. When you click an affiliate link, the external provider may use cookies or similar identifiers to record the referral, attribute a booking or purchase, prevent fraud or measure campaign performance. These technologies are controlled by the external provider once you visit its service and are subject to that provider’s policies.

The presence of an ordinary outbound affiliate link does not necessarily mean that a third-party cookie is placed before the user clicks it. Embedded widgets, advertising scripts or conversion technologies may behave differently and should be subject to the appropriate consent rules when they load on the Site.

10. Embedded videos, maps and social content

Some pages may include videos, maps, social media content or other third-party embeds. If an embed connects to a third party when the page loads, that provider may receive technical information such as the IP address and browser details and may set or read identifiers. Where this is non-essential tracking, the content should be blocked or limited until the appropriate consent has been given.

11. Consent for non-essential technologies

Where consent is legally required, non-essential cookies or similar tracking technologies should not be placed, read or activated before the user has made a valid choice. Consent must be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous and should be demonstrated through a clear affirmative action. Pre-selected options or inactivity should not be treated as consent.

Refusing optional cookies should not prevent access to ordinary public content. Some optional third-party functions, such as an embedded video or interactive widget, may remain unavailable until the user chooses to enable the relevant category or service.

12. Cookie banner and choice design

Where a cookie banner or consent interface is used, it should allow users to understand the main purposes of non-essential tracking and make a genuine choice. Under the Italian Data Protection Authority’s guidance, non-essential tracking should be disabled by default; consent should not be inferred merely from scrolling or continued browsing; and users should have a practical way to refuse or manage optional technologies in addition to accepting them.

13. Dreaming New York consent management platform (CMP)

Dreaming New York uses a locally implemented consent-management interface. On a first visit, optional categories are disabled by default. The interface offers Accept all, Reject non-essential, Customize and a close (X) control. Closing the banner keeps the non-essential categories disabled. The choices can be changed at any time through the Cookie settings control displayed in the site footer.

dny_cmpDreaming New YorkStores the consent version and the visitor’s choices for Analytics, Marketing/Affiliate technologies and External Media so that the Site can respect the choice on subsequent visits.Strictly necessary / technical190 days, unless deleted sooner by the user or replaced after a new choice

The CMP does not treat scrolling, continued browsing or inactivity as consent. When Analytics consent is not present, the Site suppresses the front-end Jetpack Stats tracking code. If Analytics is accepted, Jetpack Stats may load on the next page load, subject also to supported browser privacy signals such as Do Not Track. Optional external embeds and known non-essential tracking scripts can likewise remain unavailable until the corresponding category is enabled.

The consent preference cookie is used to remember and demonstrate the visitor’s choice and does not itself contain a name, email address or booking information. The Site may ask again after the preference expires, after a material change to the categories or technologies, or where the previous choice can no longer be reliably read.

14. Changing or withdrawing consent

Where a consent-management interface is available, users should be able to revisit their choices and withdraw consent as easily as it was given. Withdrawal applies to future processing and does not affect processing lawfully carried out before the withdrawal. Users can also delete stored cookies through browser settings, although doing so does not automatically communicate a legal withdrawal of consent to every external provider.

15. How long consent choices and cookies are stored

Cookie lifetimes vary. Session cookies generally end with the browser session; persistent cookies remain until their expiration date or deletion. Consent records may be retained for a reasonable period to remember and demonstrate the user’s choice. Under the Italian Garante’s guidance, a consent request should not be repeatedly presented merely to pressure users who have already refused, except where there are valid reasons such as a material change in conditions, inability to know the previous choice, or the passage of the period recognized by the applicable guidance.

16. Browser controls

Most browsers allow users to view, delete or block cookies and manage site permissions. Blocking all cookies may interfere with functions that depend on technical storage. Browser controls are separate from any consent settings provided directly by the Site or by third-party services.

17. Do Not Track, Global Privacy Control and regional signals

Browsers or extensions may transmit privacy preference signals such as Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control. The legal effect of these signals varies by jurisdiction and processing activity. Where applicable law requires a recognized opt-out signal to be honored for covered processing, the Site and relevant providers should handle the signal in accordance with that law and their technical capabilities.

18. Third-party policies and cookie information

Third-party providers are responsible for the cookies and tracking technologies they control. Their names, purposes, cookie durations and data uses may change when they update their services. Users should consult the privacy/cookie documentation of the relevant provider before enabling optional third-party content or completing a booking or transaction.

19. Current cookie inventory

The exact cookie names, providers and lifetimes visible to a visitor can depend on the page visited, browser, location, consent choices, logged-in status and third-party services enabled at that moment. For this reason, a technical cookie inventory should be kept aligned with the Site’s live configuration and reviewed whenever plugins, analytics, advertising, affiliate widgets or embedded services are changed.

Categories currently relevant to the Site may include WordPress/hosting security and technical functions, Jetpack functions, Akismet anti-spam functions where used, affiliate/booking links and optional embedded third-party content. A runtime scan may reveal additional provider-specific cookies depending on the services loaded on a particular page.

20. Relationship with the Privacy Policy

When cookies or similar technologies process information that qualifies as personal data, the additional information required by privacy law—including purposes, legal bases, recipients, transfers, retention criteria and user rights—is provided in our Privacy Policy.

21. Updates to this Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy when the Site’s technologies, providers, consent mechanism or legal requirements change. The date shown at the top identifies the version currently published.
